This last weekend saw the largest storm in 40yrs to hit Sunshine Village. Over 125cms fell in 4 days!

We were up there on Sunday, but high winds closed the lifts…. Monday therefore, was deeeeep! with very few people around.

I was able to steal Sarah’s laptop to process my GoPro footage in all it’s HD goodness:

I also have this from Sunday morning, but this was processed on my aging laptop, so not quite as slick:

Enjoy!

There’s a strange quirk to Parks Canada‘s annual passes.

Buy one anytime in January and it’s valid until the end of January next year….. So buy on the 1st, get 13 months. Buy on the 31st, get 12 months.

Once it expires most people will wait until their next visit to one of the parks (which could be months later) then buy another.

As I enter Banff National Park every weekend, I thought I’d renew my pass at the Parks Canada office in Banff in advance as it expires at the end of January, less than a week away.

This is the quirk…. you cant renew in advance! Parks Canada will only issue February passes starting Feb 1st.

So if I buy a pass now, I do get a 12month renewal (to January 2011) but will be holding 2 valid passes for a week. If I wait till next week I get an extra month.

Surely this is encouraging me to wait or even chance not having a pass. If my next visit is at a weekend the line-ups at the gate can be huge.

I have the money now, I want to give it to you, why should I forefit a month for being organized? Turning away a customer with cash in hand seems crazy.

So I went to AMA in Calgary to take advantage of the member discount and buy voucher that can be exchanged for a pass on our first visit in February. I figured that if I have to sit in the line-up at the weekend I may as well take advantage of the discount (which I was willing to forgo at the Parks office). AMA has always issued me a voucher in the past.

However, this time round they said Parks Canada have forced upon them rules that state they cannot sell a voucher if they still have remaining January passes.

This is turning into a lot of effort for someone who wants to support Parks Canada and stay continually covered by an annual pass.

Maybe it’s about time that Parks Canada issued annual passes that are valid for 12months from the day they are sold. Or allow renewals 2-weeks early if you present a previous years pass? Just sayin’
